Class Topic: What is Graphic Design?


Unit 1. Lesson 2- Elements and Principles of Design
(1 Week)

Essential Unit Question:
What is involved in creating a successful graphic design?

     Essential Lesson Question:
What part do the elements and principles of art play in graphic design?


     Lesson Objective:
Given visual and descriptive examples of each of the elements and principles of design, the student will be able to choose one professional graphic design and analyze the use of each element and principle located within.  This will be completed in a Microsoft word document with an image of the design on top and at least 3 sentences explaining each element and principle it contains.

     Activity:
Students will choose on example of graphic design to analyze for elements and principles.  This critique will  contain at least three sentences for each element and principle present with the design provided on top of the Microsoft Word document.
     Assessment:

1. Completion of Project.
2. Element and Principle Quiz


Elements and Principles of Design
Elements:

Line-a moving point in space-mark on a surface- implied, vertical, horizontal, diagonal, contour etc

Shape- 2D lines with no form-a contained area on a 2D surface

Color-or hue (chroma, intensity and value) all made with the primary colors

Texture-the surface quality- actual (what you can feel) or implied (what it looks like it would feel like)

Space- negative or positive area of a design

Form- something that takes up 3-demensional space


Value- the lightness or darkness of a color


Principles:
Contrast-opposing elements where one stands out over the other

Balace-symetrical or asymmetrical

Pattern-created through repetition of elements

Repetition-multiple of the same element within a design

Unity-the linking of elements-harmony

Focal Point (Emphasis)-what the viewer is meant to look at first

Movement- the flow of a design-where your eye travels
